IRB NewsWaimarama Surf Life Saving IRB (inflatable Rescue boats) attended the annual Far North Surf Rescue 90 mile classic IRB Challenge. This event was run on Saturday 1st of September 2007 in great weather conditions. Surf size ranged from 1.5 – 2 metres. Waimarama sent two boats with 3 people per team. Waimarama was the only Hawke’s Bay entry. These teams consisted of WA1 – Michael Harman, Ben Cross and DJ Morris WA2- Grey Lay, Jason Harman and Jake Ryan. Our teams finish in order of WA1- 4th and WA-2 -5th out of 19 boats from surf clubs all over the North Island. This race started at Scotts Point (top of Ninety mile beach) with a mass start, boats then traveled at full speed within the surf line and finished at Ahipara, the Southern end of Ninety mile beach. Teams are required to stop at nominated points for refueling and a range of
beach events. These events consisted of run around Matapia Island 400 metres
from shore or motor through the hole in the island, next is a 200 metre boat
and engine carry over The Bluff sand spit, then a team hill run at Hukatere
hill and at Waipapakauri the last change point is a team motor carry around
a beach flag. The purpose of such an event is to teach endurance crewing and boat speed skills used when traveling along a beach to a rescue. The beach events are designed to simulate rescue work at the scene of an incident. |
